Public Displays of Affection

Baguette doesn’t always want to kiss us. But when she does, she’s very egalitarian. I’ll say, “Can Mommy have a kiss?” And sometimes she ignores me.

But sometimes she says, “Mommy kiss!” and gives me a kiss through her pacifier. Then–without fail–she’ll say, “Daddy kiss!” and give a kiss to Mr. Sandwich. (Today she said, “Now I need to give Daddy a kiss,” but I’m not sure most people would have known that.) (Sometimes she will follow up with “Wicket kiss!” and we are happy that she wants to kiss the dog on the back.)

Lately, she’s started something new: she puts one hand on my jaw and the other on Mr. Sandwich’s, and pushes us together so that we will kiss each other. She’ll do this three or four times in succession.

I’m glad she likes to see us kiss, because she’s just going to have to put up with it.

  1. Awww. My husband and I both grew up in families with parents who weren’t affectionate with each other (well, mine were divorced, so I guess I should just be glad that there weren’t any punches thrown), and we’ve promised ourselves that our children would grow up knowing what a healthy adult relationship looks like — complete with hugs and kisses, and couch cuddles. (We’ll spare them some of the other stuff.) Baguette is a cutie, and you two are clearly doing a good job!

    1. My parents were affectionate with each other and my brother and me, but Mr. Sandwich didn’t grow up with that. Fortunately, he’s very comfortable with expressing affection now!

My parents had a fantastic marriage, and I always knew that I wanted that, too–particularly since I’d seen it first-hand. That’s a big part of why I was older when I got married; Mr. Sandwich was the first boyfriend who had what it took to be in that kind of marriage. It was definitely worth waiting for!

  2. That is so precious! I wish my son would kiss me, but he’s not a bit interested. I can’t complain though – he gives awesome hugs, replete with a little pat on the back. 🙂
