Why I Don’t Wear Makeup*

  • I don’t have a lot of time in the morning.
  • I look fine like this.
  • I base my worth on abilities and accomplishments.
  • I forget about it.
  • The most I have time for is lipstick in the car, when I remember it and there’s a red light.
  • Seriously, I look just fine.
  • Mr. Sandwich doesn’t think I need makeup, and why would I care if anyone else did?
  • I’m not kidding. It takes too much time, and time is at a premium.
  • I’m not kidding. I look fine without it.

Do I think I’m a supermodel? No. Do I think I’m a horrifying troll? Also no.

*I will wear makeup to a job interview. Or your wedding.

  1. I used to be horrified at the idea of being seen without make-up, back when I looked like what people are trying to achieve with make-up even when I wasn’t wearing any. Now that I’m old and need make-up, I just don’t care or have the time for it. My 18-yr-old self would be horrified.

    1. When I went to my junior prom, I’m fairly sure I was wearing all the makeup produced in the 1980s. Even at the time, it was horrifying to me. So. Much. Makeup. And I had an 80s perspective on makeup at the time!

I remember actual pressure to wear it in college.

And I think we all look fine without it. I think makeup is totally optional.

  2. Good for you! I will put on eyelinger and curl my lashes to enhance my eyes. I will NEVER, EVER cover up or conceal anything on my face. I am happy with my face, imperfections and all. I always tell my son that I’m only highlighting my eyes because I love them. It’s all about promoting positive body image.

    1. Nice! I don’t wear eyeliner or mascara because they make my eyes sting.

And I don’t have a philosophical objection to makeup. People who like wearing it should wear it. But I do believe that it should be completely optional, because I think we all look fine.

  3. I wear makeup most days and to work. Though there are definitely levels of makeup. There’s the ‘I’m going to a wedding’ level and then there’s the basic level that happens most days. I just feel like my face looks blank without it!
