Deja Vu
I’m reasonably sure that I’ve already experienced this kind of heat during the summer. It’s November, right?
Reading:
Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt: The Story of a Daughter and a Mother in the Gilded Age by Amanda Mackenzie Stuart. I know I’m liking it, because I just put it on hold at the library for a third time. Apparently everyone else wants to read it, too.

Things to Keep in Mind When Planning a Reunion
1) Name tags must be legible. Don’t use tiny script fonts because you think they look elegant. A name tag is useless to me if I can’t read the name.
2) Have some events to get people mingling and talking. Dinner and a DJ means people just stay at one table. That excludes the out-of-towners who may be trying to reconnect.
3) Don’t be cheap with your bar. It’s not necessary to have an open bar, but there’s no reason not to include a drink or two in the price of admission. And don’t charge for sodas. Just don’t.
4) If it’s a class reunion, have yearbooks. It’s been a while, and we don’t all look the same. Sometimes that photo makes a difference. And having them on the illegible name tags is not enough.
5) If you’re having a directory or memory book of some kind, for crying out loud, have it copyedited. It just looks sloppy to have names and dates listed incorrectly. Especially if the date of the event is wrong.
On a related note, I’d really like to know how many people actually buy the panoramic pictures, and what they do with them afterward. Do they look at them and have happy memories of how the photographer yelled at the group throughout the photo?

Those Summer Nights
…are finally getting cool, after the disastrously hot weather we had a few weeks ago. Finally, it feels like Los Angeles.
Although it’s August. Hmm…I wonder what September will be like. And winter. Well, there’s one way to find out.
In the meantime, I’m delighted.

Prevailing Winds
Ah. There’s the change in the weather they’ve been predicting. Much better.

Ghost in the Little HouseAlso, I’ve finished (except for the book list in the back) Tim Cahill’s Lost in My Own Backyard. While I appreciate Cahill’s love of Yellowstone, I think this is the weakest of his books. I’ve really enjoyed his others, and not just for the titles. (Who can resist A Wolverine is Eating My Leg and Jaquars Ripped My Flesh? Fantastic.)
As for Ghost in the Little House, it’s also disappointing. Rose Wilder Lane seems to have lived a fascinating life full of ideas, travel, and experiences that were quite radical for her day, but I don’t have the slightest idea what she was like to spend time with. Would I have liked her? Found her frustrating to be around? I’m halfway into the book and I still don’t know. The author emphasizes Lane’s affinity for Albania, but I don’t quite get it. I want to know how it affected her, and how it touched her soul. If it was so important to her, the book should make me want to go there as well. But the author hasn’t really made me care about Lane, so I don’t care about what she cared about.

Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt: The Story of a Mother and Daughter in the Gilded Age, by Amanda Mackenzie Stuart
Alexander Hamilton, by Ron Chernow
Personal Memoirs, by Ulysses S. GrantThat’s a lot of biographies and autobiographies. No doubt there will be more; we’ve been watching The History Channel’s series on the American Revolution. It’s quite good, although they seem to be trying really hard to serve as apologists for Benedict Arnold. Still, it’s reminding me of all of the Early American biographies I want to read.

P.F. Chang’s
I’m not going to tell you that this is the best Chinese food in the world, or even the best Americanized Chinese food in the world. In fact, I’m a little put off by the “national chain” aspect of the place.
But if you do go there, and you order Beef with Broccoli, get a side of the sauce for their Mandarin Beef. It transforms the dish from quite tasty to really delicious. And the broccoli is excellent.

Ben & Jerry’s
The Cone. It is a marvel, and it is delicious. And for Ben & Jerry’s, it’s relatively not bad for you. Eat with discretion, but enjoy.

Speaking of the George Foreman Grill…
Last night we made one of our easiest summer meals. Take a salmon fillet and marinate it in something (yesterday I used Newman’s Own Sesame-Ginger salad dressing; Worcestershire sauce also works). Then grill it for four minutes and 20 seconds. Goes great with garlic mashed potatoes, but what doesn’t?
Also, Costco salmon fillets are individually packaged and easy to use.
